About Marilyn Colter

Marilyn Colter knows the chaos and heartbreak that families experience when their brain-injured family member comes home—she lived it.

marilynMarilyn is a former newspaper reporter, editor/publisher, and university faculty member. When her husband suffered a brain injury in 1982, Marilyn drew on her journalism experience to write Missing Pieces: Mending the Head Injury Family, first published in 1987 and revised in 2004. Marilyn has also edited non-fiction books on stroke and Lou Gehrig's disease. She has been an expert witness in brain injury court cases and has spoken extensively to head injury support groups.

Using her experience and research, Marilyn created a keynote speech, break-out sessions and workshops for brain injury families and caregivers. Her informal speaking style resonates with them and health care professionals alike. Attendees learn:

  • Why grieving is so difficult in a brain injury family
  • How to deal with disruptions in family dynamics and roles
  • Why letting go is so hard but so necessary
  • How to sustain a belief that life will get better
  • How to leave the darkest shadows of brain injury behind
